11-Dec-10: the river was already partly frozen, I couldn't bring fish to the shore, so I decided to just check how they would react to boiled maize soaked in some heavily spiced chocolate concoction. They did get at it, but without full enthusiasm. Unclear if this was just too spicy, or if they weren't hungry enough (group of carp wasn't that big, and I chummed with a good deal of maize the evening before).

Well, we typically use chocolate syrup from Hershey, but I don't think the brand matters very much.


What we did for this specific video was to warm up chocolate syrup mixed with Tabasco (a very spicy flavor used in cooking) and a small bottle of Thai fish sauce (with anchovy). We boiled the maize separately, then we mixed both maize and syrup and let it rest for a couple of days. Frankly, I suspect this was a tad too strong, and the carp weren't feeding as enthusiastically as I've seen them do.
